Work Life Parenting Balance

Just over a year ago I made the big decision to leave my permanent job in order to find something more flexible to allow me to parent little owl.
I had a great first year as a supply teacher although I always seemed to be working on Fridays when my mummy friends were off.  But I did manage to pack in lots to the 3 days Little Owl and I would spend together.

However, the money wasn't great, and because I only worked two days a week, it took me nearly the whole year to do my 12 week probation period and for my money to go up to a more reasonable amount.

September came around and the work didn't. Not until October. So now we were really skint. Finally a job came in. It could be a permanent job too if I want it to be (and I guess if they like me).  But its lots of hours.  The money really is great but my weeks aren't.

For the last 3 weeks I have worked for a couple of hours on a Monday lunchtime, Tuesday afternoons, Wednesday & Thursday all day leaving me with only Fridays off.  By the time I have got to Friday on the first week I was shattered and had had a lazy day with Little Owl.  A whole week gone and we'd done nothing special, no little outings, no friends seen, to trips to the swings, no baking or craft at home.

I felt very much like it on the second week too but I had plans, Little Owl and I had a mammoth 6 hour drive to get to Lancashire for the Friends of Sangam Gathering.  I was tired but it was great to spend some quality time with Little Owl and by the time I was driving home, I made the decision that the Monday lunchtimes had to stop.  Its a rush to get from swimming, drop Little Owl with my mum and then get to work.  At first I thought I would have the afternoons to catch up with friends but if I skipped lunch the earliest I could meet people was 2 o'clock.  It really wasn't going to work.
Little Owl is nearly two and a half.  That's two and a half years of fun we have had together.  This time next year I will be filling in her school applications and the following year she will start school.  Our adventures will be even more limited.  I don't want to loose a year of this precious time together.  I might work longer days on the days I am working, but until Little Owl goes to school, I'm not planning on working more than 3 days a week.

I realise that I am in a very lucky position to have that as an option, it has come at a financial cost, but one that we can cope with.  I'm also pleased that I have had these few weeks of working so much, I think it will make me appreciate what time I get with Little Owl.

So now I have plans to make!  Its time to sign Little Owl up for a playgroup or nursery for the days I work.  I think she will love it - just got to find the right one!  And then I need to find some new groups or activities for us to go to on the other days.  Exciting times ahead!

A Supply Teacher's September

September.
New year
New beginnings
Apart from I can't start yet
Other than swimming, Little Owl doesn't have a weekly group that she goes to.

I'd like to change that
Maybe a gym class or ballet? Something active
I'm also thinking she is getting more and more ready to go to a play group.
She is toilet trained and quite articulate enough to make herself understood.
She craves attention and something to occupy her.
Papa Owl and I went to look at a couple of places in July but haven't settled on anywhere yet.
Its a big decision.

But as much as I want to get on with planning, I cant.
I don't have a job.
I'm not worried about it, the phone has started to ring.  I actually have an interview tomorrow. Possibly for 3 days a week!
But right now I don't know which days I will be working, or how many.

A play group would help my parents out with childcare but I can't arrange anything until I have a job.
I can't sign Little Owl up to any new groups until I know which days I will be working.
I am in limbo.
I know from last year it can all happen incredibly fast. I could be starting work on Monday.
Or I may not.

This job is going to involve a lot of effort on my part.
Teaching A Level for the first time.
It either means evenings spent working or weekends,  or Little Owl going to playgroup on one of the days I don't work.

And where to send her?
Somewhere I can take her to myself before I start work?
Somewhere I can walk to?
That sounds ideal but limiting.
Or somewhere that is easy to drive to?

So many questions.

So many what ifs.

Time will tell but one thing I'm sure of is that this is going to be one hell of a week!

Leather Anniversary

Three years ago, Papa Owl and I married, it was a wonderful wonderful day spent with our friends and family.  We had a church wedding followed by a reception in the grounds of Bodiam Castle.  Each year we try to go back to Bodiam on our anniversary and this time we took the train!
The Kent & East Sussex Railway runs from the Kent village of Tenterden all the way to Bodiam in East Sussex.  We decided to join the train in Northiam as we would have to drive past it to reach Tenterden and we wanted to make sure we had plenty of time at the castle.  It also saved us a bit of money!  Little Owl was very excited to see the train but wasn't so keen on the noise!
A short walk from Bodiam Station is Bodiam Castle, a National Trust property, is every thing you would want from a castle!  It has a moat, bridge, towers, crenelations and even goldfish!  There's ample parking if you don't have time to catch the train, and plenty of space to have a picnic. We treated ourselves to lunch at their cafe before heading up to the castle for our annual photo!

Before we knew it, it was time for the train home, getting one last glimpse of the castle before Little Owl couldn't keep her eyes open any longer and fell fast asleep!

Happy 3rd (leather) anniversary Papa Owl!

In 5 years time...

We've just committed to a 5 year deal on our mortgage.

5 years

It doesn't seem that long...

And yet...

In 5 years time we'll be nearly a third of our way through paying off our mortgage! We've owned our house now for 3 years, and I must admit at the time 25 years on a mortgage felt like forever, but those 3 years have gone quick as I'm sure the next 5 will too. Paying off a third will certainly feel less pressured.

In 5 years time we'll have made lots of progress with out house, hopefully.  A new roof is planned for late summer.  The dining room and green room are current work-in-progress.  I'd really hope that we will have a new bathroom by then too.

In 5 years time, I might have a proper job!  Or not.  I've enjoyed the flexibility of doing supply, but I've been lucky all year of having long term placements.  But this month I have started doing day to day supply, and that's a little more stressful, getting up and ready for work in the morning but not actually knowing you have any.

In 5 years time, Little Owl will be at school.  Wearing a little uniform, going every day.  So many decision to make about going to school...

In 5 years time we might have another small owl in our nest or possibly two?! Who knows, but by then we'll have an idea of how big a family we are to become.

How exciting!

The TMI Tag

The lovely Kate at Family Fever recently tagged me in the aptly named TMI tag… forgive me if some of my answers are a little flippant!

1. What are you wearing? Full evening dress, stilettos and pearls.  I do like to make an effort for Papa Owl in the evening once Little Owl is in bed.

2. Ever been in love? Of course.  Papa Owl is my everything.

3. Ever had a terrible break up? Oh yes.

4. How tall are you? 5'3" is that short? I’ve always seen it as the short end of normal…

5. How much do you weigh? Lots.

6. Any tattoos? Just the one of a gecko on my ankle.  Got it when I was 18, on the day I collected my A-Level results.

7. Any piercings? Yup.  Three holes in each lobe, a small hoop at the top of one ear and another on that ear, I thought it was my anti-tragus but I’ve just googled it and apparently it isn’t.  After that it’s just my nose. oh -  and my tongue.

8. OTP? Eh?

9. Favourite show?  I’ve really got into Happy Valley at the moment.  I do like my soaps too – Corrie and Enders.

10. Favourite bands? Umm… music to me is something that you hear on the radio, I don’t actively seek out particularly bands or musicians.

11. Something you miss? India.  Sangam.  My other home.

12. Favourite song? Following on from question 10… I guess I should say “It Must Be Love” by Madness as it was our first dance at our wedding.

13. How old are you? Early 30s.  Not quite ready to say mid-30s.  Really this decade is galloping!

14. Zodiac sign? Sagittarius

15. Quality you look for in a partner? Friendship. Sneaky answer that because the follow up question is what qualities do I look for in friendship?  All you need to know is Papa Owl is my best friend EVER!

16. Favourite quote? Gosh – I’m going to have to think on this one.  I see things I like but haven’t committed them to memory.  I remember going around Gandhi’s house in Mumbai, and they had a lot of quotes on the displays that I thought were beautiful.  On that same trip I visited Gandhi’s house in Delhi, with an identical display of Gandhi’s story modelled in boxes.  They also had a new interactive display.  The concept was so new that staff had been employed to press the buttons for you.  I love India!

17. Favourite actor? Um…

18. Favourite colour? Blue

19. Loud music or soft? Errr…. Loud music played quietly?

20. Where do you go when you're sad? The beach I guess.  It’s not really an option when you have a kid… the toilet is my only hope of escape!

21. How long does it take you to shower? Believe it or not, I’ve never timed it.

22. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?  Not long.

23. Ever been in a physical fight? No, luckily.

24. Turn on? … the radio?

25. Turn off? … the telly when Little Owl stands too close?

26. The reason I joined Youtube? Can’t remember now, but I suspect it was something to do with Sangam…

27. Fears? Spiders.  Really hate them.  I was trying to be brave watching one the other side of the window with Little Owl the other day, I lasted about 30 seconds before bursting into tears. I also don’t like dead things, such as spiders.  Or flying thingsOr heights.

28. Last thing that made you cry? The spider outside the window.

29. Last time you said you loved someone? About 2 hours ago when I kissed Little Owl goodnight.

30. Meaning behind your blog name? I was looking for a blog name that would naturally lend itself to pseudonyms for us all.  With us both being teachers, I didn’t want to make it too easy for kids to find us!  For a brief period, I was a Brownie leader and Laughing Owl was the name the Brownies chose for me.

31. Last book you read? The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty.  It was a real page turner.

32.  The book you're currently reading? I think I started reading the latest Terry Pratchett before I left India but haven’t picked it up since I got home.

33. Last show you watched? Actual show, at the theatre was Hastings Gang Show.

34.  Last person you talked to? Papa Owl, on the phone.

35. The relationship between you and the person you last texted? Actual text was Papa Owl, he’s my husband you know.  Been watsapping a couple of friends this evening too.

36. Favourite food? This so depends on my mood, but there is something about Coronation Chicken which I just can’t get enough of, must learn to make it!

37. Place you want to visit? Where’s the map?!!  South east Asia is on the list – all of it!  As is the Maldives – we talked about it for our honeymoon but the weather couldn’t be guaranteed in August so we opted for Hawaii instead. Kenya too – when it’s a bit more settled.  Turkey and Greece also.  Have I missed anywhere out?  Sure there are loads of places!

38. Last place you were? At my parents, Little Owl and I popped in for a bit with a few toys for her to play with in their garden!

39. Do you have a crush? No.

40. Last time you kissed someone? Little Owl as I put her to bed.

41. Last time you were insulted? Don’t know.  Don’t like to dwell on such things, so if it was recently then it was water off of a ducks back.  There was a student a couple of weeks ago who shouted “you’re just a f@*king intervention teacher” amongst other things.  I think that was meant as an insult.  Not sure.

42. Favourite flavour of sweet? Chocolate

43. What instruments do you play? None.  I have tried. Did piano at school, spent 3 years preparing for the exam before grade 1.  Recorder when I was tiny, violin for a year or two at primary, even did guitar at evening class.  My brother particularly liked the phase when I was trying to learn the harmonica.

44. Favourite piece of jewellery? I’m not big into jewellery but the pieces I do have, I love.  There’s my engagement and wedding rings, I really like them, not just for what they represent, but also because Papa Owl and I designed them.  My something old is special to me too.  Its a gold sovereign on a necklace which was given to me by my Grandma.  The story goes that her Grandfather gave his young daughter a bag of sovereigns when he left to seek his fortune and this is one of those.

45. Last sport you played? Sport… Um… I’ve done aqua aerobics recently if that counts… or kicking a ball with Little Owl - that's football right?

46. Last song you sang? Trying to think… not sure Little Owl and I have sung today which is a little unusual.  It was possibly “Baby baby, baby baby, I love you, Peekaboo, Peekaboo, I love you.  The underlined bits are the words Little Owl sings.

47. Favourite chat up line? Really?

48. Have you ever used it? Do girls have chat up lines?

49. Last time you hung out with anyone? Yesterday. I hung out with my friend and her toddler at the beach.

50. Who should answer these questions next? I'm tagging Ickle Pickle

1. What are you wearing? Black jeans and a black and white stripy tee. Nothing exciting, but I don't tend to dress up for the Easter holidays lol.

2. Ever been in love? Just the once - with my husband. I used to think I was in love before him, but when I met him I realised what love actually is. (Stopping with the soppy stuff now)

3. Ever had a terrible break up? Not really. I have had a few break ups that I thought were terrible at the time, but they really weren't, looking back.

4. How tall are you? A diddy 5'3"

5. How much do you weigh? Ermmm...I don't know. I tend not to weigh myself much, I will just get depressed ha ha! It's probably somewhere around the 10 stone mark.
